The Chevrolet Cobalt is a big improvement over its Cavalier predecessor, but it's still well behind the class leaders in handling dynamics, interior design, seat comfort and materials quality. Chevy is pinning its hopes on the new Cobalt to win back small-car buyers accustomed to the first-class accommodations and driving dynamics of cars like the Civic and Mazda 3.

Unfortunately, we don't think the Cobalt is quite ready to make a run at the leadership in the economy car segment.

Based on the platform used for the Saturn Ion, the Chevrolet Cobalt features a conservative and uncluttered appearance inside and out. Though we're still not sold on the coupe's quad round taillamps, the overall look should offend no one.

Inside, materials quality, styling and comfort are much improved over the Cavalier, but compared to most competitors, the plastics are cheap, the seats are flat and unsupportive, and there's almost no interior storage. The Chevy Cobalt is available as a coupe or sedan, with a sporty SS Supercharged coupe filling the top spot with a horsepower supercharged engine.

Other Cobalts come with a solid-performing hp, 2. The vehicle's stiff structure does wonders for noise and vibration control, and makes for a solid-feeling ride regardless of terrain.

Even the doors close with a solid "thunk. Unfortunately, the car's handling characteristics are nothing special. Body roll is excessive around turns, and the electric power steering is slow with little feedback. If all you want is an inexpensive car that's quick on its feet and quiet on the highway, the Chevrolet Cobalt might satisfy you.

But if you're looking for a budget sedan or coupe with a complete package of amenities and sharp handling, you'll want to check out the competition first. The Chevrolet Cobalt is available as a two-door coupe or four-door sedan. LS models feature a standard CD player, air conditioning, a driver-seat height adjuster, a split-folding rear seat and inch wheels. The LT adds cruise control; power windows, locks and mirrors; keyless entry; upgraded seats; alloy wheels; upgraded interior lighting; and antilock brakes.

The LTZ sedan comes with leather seats, a seven-speaker Pioneer sound system, chrome trim and inch alloys. The new-for-'06 SS adds a more powerful engine, sport-tuned suspension, unique fascias, inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. The SS Supercharged coupe features a supercharged motor, an even firmer suspension, leather seats with color-keyed inserts, a boost gauge and inch alloys.

With horsepower and pound-feet of torque, the engine makes the Chevrolet Cobalt one of the faster econoboxes out there. The SS features an even more potent 2. The SS Supercharged coupe features a supercharged 2. The standard transmission is a five-speed manual with a four-speed automatic available as an option. Antilock brakes are optional on LS models, and standard on all other Cobalt models.

Full-length side curtain airbags are optional across the board. Each seating position has a three-point seatbelt, and all but LS models can be equipped with OnStar telematics. Choose any of the engines on the Chevrolet Cobalt and you'll have ample power for just about any situation. Commuters will enjoy the Cobalt's smooth, quiet ride, but the car's handling is less impressive. The suspension allows too much body roll, and the electric steering is slow with minimal feedback.

The SS models offer tighter handling through the turns but still fall short of the class leaders in terms of refinement. Inside, the Chevy Cobalt features attractive gauges and a full-featured stereo head unit give the Cobalt a modern feel. Still, the design is plain, unless you upgrade to the LTZ and its leather seats and wood grain trim, or one of the SS models, which have faux aluminum trim. Seat comfort is unimpressive, particularly in back where the bench is flat and low.

Available styles include LS 4dr Sedan 2.

When I went out after work it started but the engine was shaking like it had a misfire, and my check engine light was flashing. Did a basic tune-up replaced plugs were badreplaced air and fuel filter fuel filter was dirtychecked for vacuum leaks nonechecked PCV clear.

After I did all of this I still had the really bad idle and a smell of gas in the exhaust. Next step to me was to Replace the Crankcase Position sensor and I noticed that there was no longer a smell of gas in the exhaust but the issue is still there.

I have a lot of pressure out of my exhaust pipe, and I banged on the CAT to see if it sounded hollow or solid, sounded hollow. Not sure if it's the CAT producing enough back pressure to kill the engine or if it is something else. I used a higher grade of tester and noticed that while the engine is running the timing kept advancing and retarding many degrees at idle. I saw up to 13 degrees on the high end and 6 degrees on the low end.

Is this normal? I have never heard of an engine trying to adjust it's timing so much at idle. Do you.

I think the next step for you is to have the injectors professional tested and flushed. The code leads to injector issues. Also check the injector harness to see if the wiring is rubbed through anywhere. Was this answer. I couldn't find a shop that would test and clean the injectors today so I went and individually disconnected the injectors starting from left to right.

Here is what I got. Disconnected first injector connector--engine idled about RPM and died. This tells me the first injector is working. This tells me this injector is suspect. Reconnected second injector connector and disconnected third injector connector--Same results as second injector.

Suspect this injector is also malfunctioning. Reconnected third injector connector and disconnected fourth injector connector.Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors.

Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector's pins. Problems with the knock sensor will not cause an engine performance problems. Replacing the knock sensor usually takes care of the problem.

What does this mean? Cost of diagnosing the P code Labor: 1. The auto repair labor rates vary widely across the country, and even within the same city. When is the P code detected? P Meaning The Knock Sensor KS senses engine knocking also known as detonation or pinging using a piezoelectric element. The sensor is attached to the cylinder block, cylinder head or intake manifold. A knocking vibration from the cylinder block is sensed as vibrational pressure.

The ECM uses this signal to retard the ignition timing and protect the engine from this damaging pre-ignition. P More Information Need more information on how to fix the P code?

Get Access to Factory Service Manuals. Related Information. Repair Importance Level: 2. Why is the Engine Light ON?Good afternoon, My cobalt is making some serious knocking sounds.

When I turn the key the engine turns over and then bogs for a second before barely catching itself attempting to idle. When I press on the gas a knocking sound speeds up with the speed of the engine. A little more detail if it helps, while driving the day before yesterday I noticed that when I tried to speed up quickly it felt as though my clutch was slipping, or as though I was losing a little power from time to time.

It gradually got worse, and yesterday on my way home from work I was losing power more and more quickly. It got so bad that I could barely keep my car above 65 on the highway. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to let me know at any time, and I will respond the moment I get your message.

Please, thank you, and have a great day y'all.

The p means you need a thermostat the p and p means you have a evap leak or a issue within your evap system. The the p could be the knocking noise causing that code. The compression is low for that engine. Does the knocking sound like its coming from the bottom end? Also does it feel like the engine is missing?

What Edmunds Says Pros. Got a lease deal in hand? Give us the details and we'll tell you if it's a good one. Evaluate my deal. Do you have a lease expiring and got offered the chance to extend it for a month or more?

Did you get a great deal? Meet your fellow owners in our Owners Clubs. June edited March in Chevrolet. This is the place to report your Cobalt's problems and share any possible solutions. May Poncho and Superfatman, known problems are still problems. GM messed up the air conditioning, the shift solenoid and probably the headlights. Just because a problem in known, doensn't mean it's OK.

This isn't the 70s where they get three years to work out the bugs. I've had my Nissan for 3 years and 34, miles and have never taken it back to the dealer for any dumb problems like this. But where does Nissan rank as far as defects per vehicle? It is one of the worst ones for defects per vehicle, warranty claims.

As with most first year cars look at Honda Civic forum there are problems that need to be resolved. The issues with the Cobalt are first year problems. GM has you so used to this BS that you think it's completely normal. It's not and at the prices of even the cheapest cars today, we deserve better than a "few kinks to work out".

You can deride Nissan all you want, but my Altima is an early model 2nd year and I haven't had to deal with any dumb stuff like the air conditioning leaking all over the interior, the car going haywire because I spilled coffee in the cupholder or the headlights acting like a fishbowl.P is a somewhat common trouble code with the Chevy Cobalt.

It is relatively serious problem since it leaves your vehicle in failsafe mode. Diagnosing it can be tricky without a good scanner and the knowledge of what you are doing. The symptoms of P are going to vary by year and model, but they certainly are going to cause noticeable changes in the way that your Cobalt drives.

This is what you need to address. A good mechanic will utilize a scanner to diagnose when the codes were set and reset them. If it all checks out and the code comes back, they may go ahead and replace the TPS sensor in question. Most of the time, the problem when P is thrown will be the TPS sensor itself.

It no longer is accurately tracking how hard the fuel pedal is being pushed. Diagnosing the issue with a scanner or having a mechanic take a look can save the expense of buying a TPS sensor that your Cobalt does not actually need.

Good luck diagnosing P in your Chevy Cobalt. If there is anything that you would like to add, please leave a comment below. Chevy Cobalt P Symptoms The symptoms of P are going to vary by year and model, but they certainly are going to cause noticeable changes in the way that your Cobalt drives. Here are the most common symptoms of P The vehicle will hardly respond to the throttle at all. This limited power is a failsafe to keep the vehicle able to move, but not super fast.

The Cobalt may idle differently. Failsafe mode leaves a vehicle in a state that makes it almost impossible to drive and enjoy. GuruSB95T answered 10 months ago. Same thing happened to my Cobalt - I have a code reader and got the same problem code - p Simple fix; I put a tank of premium in mine after turning off the code with my code reader and that kept the check engine light off.

Since the engine computer "learns" by running, it will eventually adjust the engine to an optimum running condition; HOWEVER, when the check engine light comes on, the computer resets everything to the default settings until the code is turned off and stays off, so your engine is probably running rich and the timing somewhat retarded.

Also, remember the wiring is deteriorating on these older cars.

2006 Chevy Cobalt p0135 o2 Sensor Check and Replace

Trust me, I have 4 of them Just because the scanner says a sensor has failed it may no be the actual sensor. It may be the wiring that leads to it. Do all your diagnostics before spending more money on parts that may not be needed. If you don't have the skill to do that then have a shop do it.

It will save you money in the long run. I have a Chevy Cobalt and the check engine light came on, I took it into the AutoZone and pulled the code for p they said that it was a knock sensor I'm not too sure where it's located or My Chevrolet cobalt ls 2.

I just changed the outboard o2 sensor cause i was getting a bunch of codes p,p,p, p etc come up causing missfiring.
